Women are increasingly doubtful that men will choose them to high-ranking political positions. This is a leading reason for women to be underrepresented in leadership positions, compared to the thirty-one percent of males. Sixty-three per cent of women agree. The Advancing Women’s & girls’ Civic and Political Leadership initiative is a brand new U.S. government initiative. The initiative will invest $33.5 million in efforts to increase the participation of women in civic life and address entrenched barriers to political participation. Gender analysis is one way to understand the root causes of women’s lack of political power. This is because ensuring equal representation in the political arena is a prerequisite for gender equality in the society.

It is not always easy to measure power dynamics within political institutions. In Nepal, for example, the recent implementation of progressive gender quotas has increased women’s representation in local government. However, men still dominate local decision making.
