A few days ago, my 7 year old daughter came home with what I thought was a challenging school project—designing and creating her own game from scratch. Jenna was stumped at first. She came up with a few ideas but then quickly gave up as she found some “glitches” in her plan. This got me thinking about Smart Women and the game of entrepreneurship.
Despite everybody’s pessimism I was determined to find the local entrepreneurs… Once we got into it, they started popping up like stars on a clear sky. I had the fortune of meeting amazing people and sharing our experiences in social Entrepreneurship around the world.
My friend works in an NGO (called Janaagraha) that was started the same way. A frustrated couple working in the US returns to India to help create a better local governance. Hard work, dedication and some time- they now have international IT company CEOs and Forbes magazine corporates on their advisory and funding board.
Don’t let family constantly interrupt when working from the house. Interruptions can have a big impact on your productivity, so advise your friends and family as to your work hours and when you will be available to them. Express the need for privacy in your Work from home business and quiet and that it will make you finish up sooner. Children should be supervised by another family member, but you should be available in the event of an emergency.
My own neighbour was an entrepreneur. I watched him return from work dog-tired every night. I also watched him sell his business (in the newspaper), build a palatial house and purchase a total of 22 cars just while he was neighbour to us. All this because his pharmaceutical company was bought out by a multinational Chinese corporation for a figure with so many zero’s in it that I couldn’t show it on both my hands!
Finding customers is the challenge of every new owner. A common mistake many make is to throw money at expensive marketing methods that produce little results. It’s not usual for a new owner to spend hundreds of dollars on a marketing campaign that produces only pennies in profits. A few campaigns like that and you’re out of business.
First, let’s talk about the negative aspects of being able to stay at home and doing your work their. Sometimes it’s hard to remember when you have your career at home, to treat it like a real job. There are dishes to do, diapers to change or homework to help with, and a million other tasks moms do every day. It can be difficult to remember that in addition to these chores, work needs to be a priority.
Learning by doing is the best way to ease into entrepreneurship. There is nothing anyone tells you relating to how to go about it which usually turns out exactly the way it was said. Without attempting, you can never master the ropes. That is why the experience counts a great deal. Easing into entrepreneurship however has to be gradual so as not to quickly make too many serious mistakes that could stop you dead on your tracks. The key is to start small then wobble and fumble along but be sure you never quit.
